Sig's Silmarils

"But in after days he rose like a shadow of Morgoth and a ghost of his malice, and walked behind him on the same ruinous path down into the Void."

Todat we shall be talking about a maiar named Mairon, the one we later come to know as Sauron. There are many things to tell about this man. Too many, perhaps, so we will focus only on the firsts parts of his life in this blog and his own choice to follow Morgoth down the path of darkness.

It is said he had many forms, although as a fellow redhead I'd say this one is a lot more acceptable than him hiding himself in a suit of armour. That he lost his physical shape, well that is entirely his own fault, but that is a story for another time.

His elven form was pretty okay too, Annatar was a known charmer.

Coughs, apologies. Let's continue. Alright, as I said, Mairon was one of the Maiar, older than even our own Elder Queen and created before the Music of the Ainur. Once he entered Eä he followed the other Ainur and became one of the Maiar of Aulë.

Sadly, it did not take long before he was persuaded by Morgoth. Mairon was known for his passion for precision and order. Aulë knew him as a good apprentice and excellent smith. Although you'd say differently now, he felt a strong dislike towards chaos. It was because of this that early on he started to admire Morgoth's power and his ways. Before the first age started he was persuaded by Morgoth to join him and quickly became known as his most trusted servant. Sauron was then the name he was given, or Gothaur by the Sindar.

Morgoth corrupted him and he became one of the fallen maiar in the eyes of others. Mairon had the wish to rule the world and shape it in his own vision. The following are not my own words, but those of who first saw him as commander, appointed by Morgoth after he made his fortress in Angband:

Sauron was become now a sorcerer of dreadful power, master of shadows and of phantoms, foul in wisdom, cruel in strength, misshaping what he touched, twisting what he ruled, lord of werewolves; his dominion was torment.

After this point, Mairon was no longer.

Thank you for joining me today. My name is Sigrúnn Gilraen. I live in a small village located not too far from Edoras. I work at a local tavern, which allows me to pick up a few interesting stories so every now and then. These stories I love to share with you in this weekly blog: Sig's Silmarils.

Arda's rich lore. Every month shall bring you a different story. Do you wish to visit the tavern to bring me a tale or two I can share with our other travellers? You are always welcome to send me a beacon...
