Sig's Silmarils

"...The thrice-enchanted globes of light that shine until the final night"

Perhaps you have wondered where the name Sig's Silmarils comes from? If not, I don't blame you. The tales of these gems have been lost of the tongues of many peoples nowadays. There is actually quite a bit to tell about them. Too much, perhaps. So I will try to keep it short- for as much as I can.

There are three Silmarils, and it is said that they are gems that of immense beauty and might. They were crafted from a very sturdy substance called Silima (Silima, Silmaril... sounds familiar). However, there was something special about them. In their core they carried the light of Valinor, the light from the two trees that once stood there. It was an elf named Fëanor who crafted them before the first age even started. Another thing, evil and mortal hands could not touch them, or their skin would burn.

Sounds cruel, huh? But that is only the start.

These gems brought greed and arrogance. There were many who desired them, including Morgoth, that creep whose name I rather not say aloud too often. Fëanor himself was greedy for them, and would not allow anyone to touch them, or even come near them. When he did not wear them himself he would store them away in an iron box. However, when Morgoth, together with Ungoliant, destroyed the two trees, the Valar implored Fëanor to give up the Silmarils, as they were the only thing that could restore the trees.

You can guess it, he never did.

Many events followed. Too many perhaps even, some that are a tale for another time. Morgoth stole the Silmarils after killing Fëanor's father, Finwë, and imbedded the Silmarils into his crown as he fled to Middle Earth. Fëanor and his sons swore an oath that they would not rest till the Silmarils were recovered, and even went as far to say they would slay everyone in their path to retrieve them. It let to many wars, the downfall of Doriath and the doom of the Noldor.

One of the Silmarils was stolen from Morgoth by Beren, to ask Thingol for his daughter's hand in marriage. The other two Silmarils were taken from Morgoth at the end of the War of the Wrath, but were again stolen afterwards by two of Fëanor's sons Maedhros and Maglor. The jewels deemed them unworthy to carry them, however, and burned their hands. In agony, Maedhros threw himself and his Silmaril into a fiery pit, and Maglor threw his into the sea.

And so the Silmarils remain in the elements of Arda as we speak. However, it is said they will one day be recovered during Dagor Dagorath, and with their light and power the two trees on Valinor will be reborn, and a new age of eternal bliss shall begin...

Thank you for joining me today. My name is Sigrúnn Gilraen. I live in a small village located not too far from Edoras. I work at a local tavern, which allows me to pick up a few interesting stories so every now and then. These stories I love to share with you in this weekly blog: Sig's Silmarils.

Arda's rich lore. Every month shall bring you a different story. Do you wish to visit the tavern to bring me a tale or two I can share with our other travellers? You are always welcome to send me a beacon...
