Sig's Silmarils

“That's what I meant,' said Pippin. 'We hobbits ought to stick together, and we will. I shall go, unless they chain me up. There must be someone with intelligence in the party.”

Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took. Two names that might sound familiar. If not, shame on you. The names of these two rascals can be found in your history books, and probably plenty of other places.

A little birdie told me a few things you might not knew about these two, so let me share them with you:

1. Merry was the tallest hobbit that ever lived. He was almost 1.38m.
2. Pippin used to be the Thain of the Shire, which is the highest level of military authority in the Shire.
3. Merry used to be the Master of buckland. Nothing that involved a lot of political things, however, it seems he wasn't too fond of those.
4. Pippin named his son after Faramir. How sweet.
5. Merry was very interested in different cultures. After the War of the Ring he constructed a library with a lot of tomes on the history and traditions of Middle-Earth.
6. Both are distantly related to Frodo. Both seem to be twice-removed first cousins and once-removed first cousin. Any idea what that means? Truth be told, I have no clue.
7. Both are buried in the royal tomb of Gondor, next to Aragorn. Even in death they were inseparable.

Do you have any other information about these two? Why not share it with all of us! I would love to hear it.

Thank you for joining me today. My name is Sigrúnn Gilraen. I live in a small village located not too far from Edoras. I work at a local tavern, which allows me to pick up a few interesting stories so every now and then. These stories I love to share with you in this weekly blog: Sig's Silmarils.

Gossip, lore, a random interview. Every week shall bring you something different. Do you wish to visit the tavern with a tale or two? You are always welcome to send me a beacon...
